Throughout the year a number of small group activities may be formed to meet a variety of student needs. Typically, small groups are designed to meet the students' academic or personal/social skill needs. Student participants will receive direct instruction in the skills to be learned and will have opportunities within the group setting to practice using these skills. Small groups may be short-term or longer in duration depending on the needs of the student participants. See below for several groups which have been run in the past with a short description.
Skills for Academic Success: This small group experience allows students to learn and discuss appropriate academic skills and to begin to assert their own individual responsibility for academic success.
Learning to Manage My Anger: Provided for students who need support in the area of anger management. The focus of this group is to learn about personal anger triggers, reactions in typical situations, and to learn and practice strategies for maintaining self-control when feeling anger.
Social Skills Training: Provided for students who need support with managing a variety of social situations, developing positive conflict resolution skills, and using positive self-control strategies.
Reducing Test Stress: This small group experience introduces stress reduction techniques in order to gain understanding in how to reduce the level of stress a student experiences when faced with assessments. Several stress reduction activities introduced are progressive relaxation and positive self-talk. This group also focuses on study strategies that are aligned to the students' unique learning styles.
